TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — The head basketball coach for USF men’s team, Bryan Hodgson, is set to take on a new challenge as he steps into the role of head coach at Providence. Speculation about this move began circulating early Sunday morning and was soon confirmed through official statements from both Hodgson and the Providence team.

Hodgson’s departure comes after just a year at the helm. In his brief tenure, the Bulls experienced a remarkable season, achieving significant milestones such as clinching both the conference’s regular-season and tournament championships. They matched a program record with 25 victories during the regular season and earned a spot in the NCAA tournament, marking their first appearance in 14 years.

In the NCAA tournament, the Bulls faced off against Louisville in the first round but were unable to advance, as they were defeated on March 19.

The Bulls lost to Louisville in the opening round of the NCAA tournament on March 19.

“I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to lead South Florida Basketball,” Hodgson said. “Deciding to leave is not easy. This place, these people, and this program mean a great deal to me. My hope is that we left it better than we found it, that we delivered on the vision we shared, and laid a foundation that will continue to grow. South Florida will always hold a special place in our hearts.”

USF will begin a search for Hodgson’s replacement. It will be the program’s 5th coach in as many years.

CEO of Athletics, Rob Higgins, shared his appreciation and said the school did “everything within reason” to try and keep Hodgson as head coach.

“Coach said he would come and win championships, and he delivered on that promise by leading the most successful season in the history of our program,” Higgins said in a statement. “This year’s team earned not one, but two championship banners for the Yuengling Center rafters, and we’re forever grateful to our student-athletes, Coach Hodgson, his family, and his staff.
