Budget cuts: Senior Citizens Inc. and other non-profits worry for the future

SAVANNAH, Ga. () — The non-profits that provide thousands of senior citizens in our area with their next meal could be impacted by federal budget cuts.

Government officials announced a proposal Thursday to dismantle the Administration for Community Living, which supports older adults and the disabled.

Mayor Van Johnson has called lawmakers to reject this proposal, and he’s asking the community to support local and national nonprofits, like Senior Citizens Inc. (SCI).

“For many, the Meals on Wheels program is the only sure assurance that our seniors, our beloved elders, are getting the things that they need every single day. I’m grateful for this program. Now, I’m going totally off script, because what’s happening in Washington, D.C. is affecting us here… it infuriates me,” Johnson said.

In a statement sent to , Representative Buddy Carter (GA-01) said, “The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services plans to restructure to more efficiently realize its goal of helping Americans live longer, healthier lives. It will continue to provide vital services to the communities it serves, including seniors and those with disabilities.”

“Nothing is imminent. The details aren’t there. But I just you know, it’s the uncertainty that is difficult for our clients and for our community,” Lyons said.

Some older adults in Savannah have been calling Lyons with concerns.

“They’re worried enough about how they’re going to have their next meal. I don’t want them to be worried that Senior Citizens won’t be there,” Lyons said.

Johnson and Lyons dropped off one of the 1,800 meals together on Friday. 76-year-old Mary James is a former volunteer herself and now benefits from the program.

SCI is on track to deliver its seven millionth meal this year.
