In a recent announcement, Bulloch County, Georgia, has implemented an alternate bus stop plan effective from Tuesday afternoon, December 2, continuing through the afternoon routes on Wednesday, December 3. This decision comes as a proactive measure to ensure the safety of both students and bus drivers amid concerns about the county’s extensive network of dirt roads.
The county is responsible for maintaining roughly 720 miles of these unpaved roads. Despite regular upkeep, they remain susceptible to deterioration due to adverse weather conditions and the passage of heavy vehicles. Rain, in particular, can transform these roads into safety hazards, compromising both the structural integrity of the roads and the safety of motorists.
To mitigate these risks, the alternate bus stop plan has been introduced. This initiative not only prioritizes the well-being of the community’s children and drivers but also aims to preserve the condition of the dirt roads when they are vulnerable to damage from large vehicles in wet conditions.
For those seeking more information, a comprehensive list of affected roads can be accessed under the Alternate Bus Stops section in the Transportation Services Help Desk, available on all district and school websites. It is crucial for drivers to remain vigilant and respect any temporary road hazard or closure signs that may be posted during this period.
Bulloch County says drivers should still adhere to any temporary road hazard or road closure signs that could be erected.
Activation of the alternate bus stop plan does not mean that school is closed. Families who live on the affected roads and have a child who rides the bus will need to either bring their child to the alternate bus stop or bring their child to school.
