Bulloch contracts 3 well drillers ahead of Hyundai well completion

BULLOCH COUNTY, Ga. () — Bulloch County leaders have three well drillers on standby, just in case residents experience issues with two Hyundai wells affecting their drinking water.

“These well drillers would be able to respond in a timely manner and diagnose the issue,” said James Pope, planning and development director for the county.

They contracted three well drillers to respond to any service requests caused by the two Hyundai wells that are set to draw millions of gallons of water per day when they come fully online.

“They’re not going to be using four-million gallons immediately so there’s a ramp up period,” said Pope.

Pope told News 3 the new contracts are a major milestone for their groundwater sustainability program which will work with residents living within the five-mile impact zone of the Hyundai wells, in the case that they have any changes to the water level in their well.

“All three are full-service outfitted so that they can replace any electrical components with it up to if the need were to arise, they could drill a new well,” said Pope.

Pope said only deep wells that are connected to the Floridan Aquifer hundreds of feet below ground would be affected. He said if your home is older, it’s likely a shallow well that’s fed by a different water source than Hyundai.

“We’ll be ready to respond in any way we have to but again with the ramp up period in water usage, we’re prepared for the worst but we’re really not expecting much impact based on the test,” said Pope.

He said the drillers would work through the county, so that there’s no upfront costs to residents. He said they would start as soon as construction finishes and they start pumping.
