BRISTOL, Va. (WJHL) — A man was arrested after allegedly slicing an officer’s hand with a knife and then running from the scene on Wednesday.

According to the Bristol, Virginia Police Department (BVPD), an officer was patrolling the downtown area around 10 a.m. At that time, the officer saw Matthew Dwayne Moore, 36, walking near Commonwealth Avenue.

A BVPD news release states the officer knew Moore had active warrants from Bristol, Virginia and that he had fled from officers days before.

“When the officer made contact and attempted to place Moore under arrest, the subject resisted, produced a knife, and sliced the officer’s hand before fleeing the scene on foot,” the release states.

Other officers responded and found Moore across the state line. Moore was reportedly detained near the intersection of Volunteer Parkway and Shelby Street in Bristol, Tennessee.

The Bristol, Tennessee Police Department (BTPD) took Moore into custody and charged him with being a fugitive from justice. As of Wednesday afternoon, he was being held in Tennessee while the extradition process was underway.

Three of the officer’s fingers were cut during the alleged assault, and the Bristol, Tennessee Fire Department bandaged the officer on the scene. The officer was taken to a nearby hospital for treatment and was later released.

Moore was charged by the BVPD with assault and battery on a law enforcement officer and obstruction of justice. His outstanding warrants reportedly included obstruction of justice, trespass and trespass after being forbidden to do so.
