BLUFFTON. S.C. () – Catie’s Gathering held its first event in South Carolina on Saturday night to raise funds to help cure childhood cancer.
Organizers say the event started as a small event in a church hall back in 2011. The event raised $5,000 that first year. Now 14 years later, the organization is hosting its seventh event of the year and has raised more than $6,000,000.
Jenny Wilkins with Cure Childhood Cancer says it was through her daughter’s passing that they felt a call to help make a change.
“We learned while Catie was sick that research for childhood cancers is hugely underfunded and that treatments just haven’t changed a lot. So that was hard, right? Like, we should have had better treatments. Kids deserve better treatment. So one day my husband looked at me after she passed away and he’s like, we’ve got to do something. And so that was just kind of where Katie’s fund was born and then these events came out of them.”
The event featured delicious food, along with a silent and live auction.
