HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. () — Freedom Day celebrates the history and legacy of Harriet Tubman and the African American community’s contribution to labor and development of historic Mitchelville, the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States.

“This year, Freedom Day at Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park offers a unique opportunity to learn more about one of Mitchelville’s most impactful heroes, the incredible Harriet Tubman. She was a fearless leader whose vision and determination helped shape historic Mitchelville into a thriving community and economy,” says Ahmad Ward, Executive Director of Hilton Head’s Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park.

People attending today made crafts, listened to music, and heard Dr. Edda Fields-Black, a leading Harriet Tubman scholar and author with deep ancestral ties to the Combahee River Raid, speak about Tubman.
