VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. – Authorities in Central Florida captured a suspect after noticing an incorrect license plate on his vehicle, as reported by the Volusia Sheriff’s Office.
On Wednesday, deputies revealed they initially observed a car sporting a mismatched tag, prompting further investigation.
“A quick check revealed the driver had an outstanding warrant for an occupied burglary,” the report stated. “When he attempted to flee by accelerating and ramming his way out, his actions only resulted in additional charges.”
Footage from body cameras shows deputies apprehending the driver, identified as 33-year-old Dillon Cottrell, after a brief pursuit.
The sheriff’s office further disclosed that deputies seized a significant amount of fentanyl and other drugs during the arrest.
Now, Cottrell faces charges of burglary, criminal mischief, fleeing law enforcement, trafficking in fentanyl, possession of a controlled substance without a prescription, aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing law enforcement.
He is held without bond. His passenger, Kelli Jo Hands, was also arrested, deputies added.
“Both are still in jail and most likely spending Christmas there,” the release concludes.
