In Paxton, Illinois, World Down Syndrome Day was marked with a heartfelt celebration dedicated to individuals living with Down Syndrome, as well as an effort to deepen public understanding of the condition.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that annually, over 5,000 babies are born with Down Syndrome across the United States. Despite the prevalence, misconceptions about the capabilities and lives of those with Down Syndrome persist.
One local advocate, Darla Schall, has been tirelessly working to change perceptions and foster inclusivity for years. She created a Facebook community, “Down Syndrome Awareness â Paxton Area,” which organizes an annual walk aimed at educating the public about Down Syndrome. Schall emphasizes the importance of challenging the limitations often imposed on individuals with this condition.
