Central Illinois Leaders React to Recent Events and Arrests in Venezuela

ILLINOIS (WCIA) — In the wake of a military strike on Venezuela and the subsequent arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, early Saturday morning, several politicians from Central Illinois have shared their reactions to these controversial actions.

Following the military intervention and arrests, President Donald Trump addressed the nation from his Mar-a-Lago resort. He announced that the United States would oversee Venezuela’s governance until a new leadership transition is in place. Additionally, Trump stated that the U.S. would assume control of Venezuela’s oil production during this period.

The detention of Maduro has already caused significant disruptions, including the cancellation of hundreds of flights, which has affected Caribbean holiday travel plans.

Amid a chorus of mixed responses from politicians nationwide, two representatives from Central Illinois have voiced their perspectives on the unfolding situation.

Congresswoman Nikki Budzinski, a Democrat representing Illinois’ 13th congressional district, openly criticized President Trump’s actions, arguing that they contravene the Constitution. She issued a full statement expressing her concerns about these developments.

Americans do not want another foreign conflict launched without transparency or authorization. I will continue tracking developments, pray for our troops’ safety, and demand the briefing Congress is owed.

On the other hand, Congressman Mike Bost (R), the U.S. representative for Illinois’ 12th congressional district, praised the president for taking “decisive action” and protecting the United States’ national security. His full statement reads:

President Trump has once again taken decisive action to protect America’s national security interests on the global stage. For years, Nicholas Maduro oversaw a deadly drug trafficking operation that flooded American streets with narcotics, destroying lives and tearing families apart in the process. Now, he will face justice. I pray the Venezuelan people seize this opportunity to restore democracy and freedom in their country. My thanks to President Trump and the brave members of the military and law enforcement who participated in this swift and successful mission.
