CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — An apartment fire on Friday, caused by the improper disposal of smoking materials, has displaced residents in Champaign.

At approximately 4:05 p.m., the Champaign Fire Department responded to a fire in a multi-family apartment building in the 1500 block of Kiler Drive. The report came from an occupant of the apartment unit on fire in the three-story building.

On scene, firefighters were able to locate a small fire in the third-story apartment bathroom. Crews quickly extinguished the fire with a fire extinguisher and were able to keep the fire contained to the bathroom.

The cause of the fire has been deemed accidental and was attributed to improperly disposed of smoking materials. There were no injuries reported on scene.
