Champaign Co. Families Receive Holiday Cheer from Toys for Tots Initiative

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — In Champaign, many parents are on the hunt for the perfect presents for their children. This holiday season, Toys for Tots has played a crucial role, assisting 12,000 families in bringing joy to approximately 28,000 children.

“I can’t imagine what we’d do without our collaboration with Toys for Tots,” expressed Melissa Sivels, Captain of the Champaign Salvation Army. “Their support enables us to reach a far greater number of children than we could manage alone.”

Recent data from the VA highlights progress in reducing homelessness among veterans.

Sivels noted a rise in the number of individuals seeking assistance from The Salvation Army this year.

“Parents are often faced with tough choices between essentials like school supplies, Christmas gifts, food, and rent,” Sivels explained. “This dilemma significantly contributes to the increased demand we’ve witnessed.”

“I think it’s a great way to just to help the parents kind of guide them,” Sivels said. “A lot of them are able to help if they’re looking for something specific,” Sivels said.

Judy Norwood is a member of The Salvation Army Church and has been volunteering since she was a teenager.

“It’s very rewarding for us as shoppers, helpers and volunteers to help these people and to see that and know that their children are going to have a merry Christmas,” Norwood said. “At one time, I needed toys when my children were little, and it’s nice to know that I’m helping others the way I’ve been helped in the past.”

Help that’s been there for almost 80 years now and will be there as long as donors continue to be generous.
