HOMER, Ill. – Exciting developments are on the horizon for the Champaign Forest Preserve as they set their sights on acquiring land adjacent to Homer Lake. This ambitious plan could be finalized sooner than anticipated, bringing new opportunities to the community.
The preserve’s administrators are in the midst of negotiations to secure nearly 34 acres opposite the site’s entrance. With this addition, they aim to expand the area’s potential while upholding the principles that have always driven their mission.
“Our focus remains on three core areas: conservation, education, and recreation,” stated Executive Director Laurie Pearson. “We plan to restore the land to its native prairie state, educate the public about the land and its wildlife, and enhance recreational opportunities by adding a new trail. Trails are a high priority for the community, and with most of our existing preserves maximizing their trail offerings, this expansion is much needed.”
