CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — One fast food restaurant in Champaign and an Urbana hotel/conference center each received less than satisfactory health inspection results in the past seven days.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, Champaign

Freddy’s, located at 420 W. Town Center Blvd. in Champaign, received a yellow placard after a follow-up inspection on Aug. 19.

During the last inspection on July 22, the restaurant was given a violation correction form to complete; it was due back on Aug. 5. During that inspection, 10 risk factor/intervention violations were reported, including two repeat violations. That was the third consecutive routine inspection in which there were no paper towels next to the handwashing sinks closest to the closet and next to the drive-thru.

Another repeat violation was for the door seals of the walk-in cooler being soiled. A further repeat of any of these violations would result in the posting of a yellow placard.

According to the Aug. 19 follow up inspection, Freddy’s failed to submit a modified food safety plan as required by the violation correction form issued on July 22. The restaurant was given an extension of 10 business days but still failed to provided the completed plan before the due date.

This resulted in the yellow placard being posted on Tuesday due to the violation correction form being unfulfilled. Freddy’s now has until Sept. 2 to complete the form or they will face permit suspension and closure.

Wyndham Garden

Wyndham Garden Urbana-Champaign, located at 1001 W. Killarney St. in Urbana, received a yellow placard after a follow-up inspection on Aug. 19.

During the previous inspection on July 21, five risk factor/intervention violations were reported, including one repeat violation. A violation correction form was issued in response to the facility only having one operational walk-in cooler. This cooler and the walk-in freezer in the kitchen were both out of operation. The person in charge at Wyndham Garden said that someone had stolen copper piping from the exterior refrigeration unit.

While the operational walk-in cooler at the west end of the kitchen hallway was working at 37°F, it was not convenient to the daily operations of the kitchen. The walk-in cooler in the main kitchen was initially required to be be repaired by Aug. 4.

During the Aug. 19 follow-up inspection, the cooler still hadn’t been repaired, and this came after the violation correction form date was extended to Aug. 18 at 4 p.m. As a result, a yellow placard was posted.

Now, if the walk-in cooler is not repaired by 4 p.m. on Sept. 2, the health permit at Wyndham Garden will be suspended, and the business will receive a red “closed” placard.
