Champaign Fire hones their skills in cramped spaces

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Before severe weather rolled into Champaign, the City’s fire department went out to train for a different kind of emergency: cramped space rescue training.

A team of firefighters had to go down a hatch — hook up a person who was unconscious — and get them to safety.

Wednesday was the second of three practice days for the department. Two people went down the hatch with air packs — and three stayed outside to secure the victim with a tripod. Captain Bryan Ball said this type of rescue has a lot of moving parts. Which makes it even more important to make sure his guys skill’s stay fresh.

“Fortunately, confined space incidents aren’t an issue,” Ball said. “There are confined space entries performed in Champaign and Urbana every day in a variety of different industries and businesses. And luckily people don’t have issues. But we have to stay on top of our equipment, stay trained, so if something does happen, we can respond quickly.”

Ball said each session will include 10 firefighters — meaning around 90 will be trained this week.

Its being held at the Sholem Aquatic Center at Centennial park — so don’t be alarmed if you see fire trucks surrounding the building. The last three sessions will be Friday.
