Champaign Police Reveal Impactful Thanksgiving Traffic Enforcement Results

The Champaign Police Department recently participated in a statewide initiative aimed at enforcing traffic laws during the Thanksgiving holiday. The results of this campaign were unveiled on Friday.

In a statement, the department emphasized their commitment to ensuring travelers’ safety throughout the Thanksgiving period. The enforcement effort, which spanned from November 21 to December 2, led to the issuance of 18 citations.

These citations were part of a broader campaign strategy designed to enhance road safety.

8 citations for speeding
3 citations for moving violations
2 citations for expired registration
2 citations for distracted driving related to mobile phone use
1 citation for driving without insurance
1 citation for driving without a valid license
1 citation for child car seat infractions

To achieve these results, the department dedicated 13 hours of grant-supported enforcement efforts, concentrating primarily on main roads that influence residential areas. This initiative was supplemented by the ongoing efforts of the officers on duty, ensuring comprehensive coverage and increased vigilance during the busy holiday season.

The campaign was conducted in partnership with the Illinois Department of Transportation, Illinois State Police and more than 200 local law enforcement agencies in a coordinated effort to increase safety on the roads ahead of an increase in travel for the Thanksgiving holiday. Additionally, this campaign was made possible by federal traffic safety funds administered by IDOT.
