CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Park District is introducing a new afterschool program at Douglass Park for middle schoolers called “the spot.”

This program is supposed to give young teenagers — who are too young to drive a car or get a job — a way to pass the time after school.

The park district is catering to their interests with video games, Tik Tok dance classes, sports competitions, and more. They said they hope the program opens doors to new interests for the students.

“We want to try to expose them to some things they typically wouldn’t be exposed to,” Terry Cole, program manager, said. “So, getting them interested in video games but also the video game industry. Getting them into things like entrepreneurship and marketing, influencing and things they might see on the internet and don’t really know how to turn those into tangible careers.”

The program is up and running right now. Registration costs $40, and students can get a day pass for $3.
