CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Federal money may be coming to Champaign County to help study law enforcement staffing needs.

Almost $90,000 is up for a vote at Tuesday’s Champaign City Council meeting. The council will decide whether or not to accept the federal grant. If they do, the money will go to the Urbana Police Department, Champaign Police Department and the Champaign County Sheriff’s Office.

The grant would be used to study where the departments need more people, something one chief has been pushing for.

“Just based on my experience, I knew that there weren’t enough policemen. We’ve subsequently had a study conducted by Harry Dunn who set the scene,” said Urbana Police Chief Larry Boone. “These are professional people; this is what they do. They study your challenges, become in staffing and they make a recommendation.”
