CARTER COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Misty Denton Bobadilla, 46, of Maryville, was arrested Wednesday for her role in the overdose death of a Carter County man.

According to a news release from the Carter County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO), a second-degree murder charge against Bobadilla stems from an investigation into the death of 41-year-old Elliott Scruggs.

On Sept. 30, 2021, CCSO deputies responded to a home on Cedar Grove Road regarding a possible cardiac arrest.

Scruggs was reportedly taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead. An autopsy determined Scruggs’ death to be due to fentanyl, the CCSO reported.

An examination of Scruggs’ cellphone found text messages between Scruggs and Bobadilla, and confirmed that Bobadilla purchased narcotics for Scruggs before his death.

On Wednesday, Bobadilla was arrested in Blount County and transferred to the Carter County Detention Center.

As of Thursday, she’s being held on a $250,000 bond.

“Drugs present a significant danger to our community, particularly fentanyl,” Carter County Sheriff Mike Fraley said in the release. “Our officers are working diligently to slow down the influx of drugs into our community and to identify and prosecute those involved in drug trafficking. If you sell or give drugs to someone who overdoses, you will be held accountable for the consequences.”
