CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — The Charleston Police Department will be assessed next week in their pursuit of accreditation.

From April 6-7, representatives from the Illinois Law Enforcement Accreditation Program (ILEAP) will conduct an on-site assessment of the department. The department said this is a “critical step” in the process for accreditation, and shows their commitment to “excellence in law enforcement practices.”

The Charleston Police Department hopes to receive Tier 1 Accreditation. It consists of more than 60 standards which ensure professionalism, accountability and efficiency in operations. The accreditation process includes a review of policies, procedures and practices, followed by the on-site assessment.

As a part of the assessment, members of the community are invited to call representatives from ILEAP and share their input regarding the police department’s compliance with ILEAP standards. ILEAP will take calls on April 7 from 12-1 p.m. Dial 217-348-5221 and select option “2” to speak privately with a representative from ILEAP.

ILEAP is a voluntary accreditation program. You can read more about the program and the standards for Tier 1 Accreditation on the website for the Illinois Association of Chiefs of Police.
