SAVANNAH, Ga. — In the spirit of the holiday season, the Chatham County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) took a heartwarming step to support the local community.

The Sheriff’s office hosted a generous initiative, setting up three locations throughout Savannah to serve a classic Thanksgiving meal at no cost to the public. The festive menu featured turkey, yellow rice, macaroni and cheese, rolls, and more.

Sheriff Richard Coleman shared his insights on the event.

“This marks our first initiative, which we’ve named ‘Thanksgiving from the Pavement,'” Coleman explained. “It’s designed for anyone passing by on Thanksgiving Day who might be in need of a meal. We’re here to provide, to assist, and to truly embody the ‘giving’ in Thanksgiving.”

Coleman emphasized that events like “Thanksgiving from the Pavement” enable the law enforcement agency to foster stronger community ties, staying true to its guiding principles.

“It’s about protection and service,” he said. “You know, myself along with the city officials, Alderman Legget is here representing the city of Savannah. We have that protection piece, which we do all the time but there’s a service piece to our motto too. Today it’s all about service. It’s all about giving. It’s all about helping those who need or who may be in need and so we want to make sure that we serve as well as protect.”

While 2025 marked the first year for the event, Coleman said he plans to make it a tradition.

“Well, [2025] being my first year as sheriff, this is a new tradition for us and so we plan to continue it as long as we can,” he said. “As long as there is a Thanksgiving Day, you’re going to have “Thanksgiving from the Pavement” from Chatham County Sheriff’s Office.”
