Cher Embraces Grammy Mishaps with Laughter and Charm in Spirited Appearance

Cher might have wished for a time machine during her lively but slightly disordered stint as a presenter at the Grammys. However, the pop icon’s cheerful demeanor turned her mix-ups into one of the night’s most entertaining and meme-worthy moments.

During the ceremony, Cher was tasked with presenting the award for Record of the Year. In a scene reminiscent of John Travolta’s infamous “Adele Dazeem” Oscar moment, she momentarily misannounced the winner as the late Luther Vandross. This slip, while certainly understandable, was quickly corrected.

Realizing her mistake amid the applause, Cher promptly clarified that the actual award recipient was Kendrick Lamar for his duet “Luther” with SZA. With a broad smile, she corrected herself, saying, “Luther Vandross – no, Kendrick Lamar!” Her good-natured handling of the situation only added to the charm of the moment.

Interestingly, her confusion wasn’t entirely unfounded, as the song “Luther” samples the late Vandross. Coincidentally, one of the track’s producers, Sounwave, began his acceptance speech by honoring the legendary singer with a shoutout, further tying Vandross to the moment.

Cher’s appearance on stage was eventful from the start. She arrived not only to present the award but also to receive her own lifetime achievement honor from host Trevor Noah, a recognition she had missed collecting in person the previous night. After delivering a spirited speech about conquering career challenges over the years, she began to exit the stage, quipping with a smile, “I guess I’m supposed to walk off now,” to the amusement and applause of the audience.

Noah called her back, saying: “Cher, before you go could we get you to announce the nominees?” He could do it, he quipped, but she’d be better.

Cher obliged, also with a smile.

When it came time to announce the winner, she first looked around, quizzically. “Oh! They told me it was going to be on a prompter,” she explained.

Noah summed it all up with a positive spin.

“I love live television,” he said.
