CHICAGO, Il. () — The accolades for Pope Leo XIV are pouring in. One Chicago restaurant has named a sandwich after him.

The sandwich chain Portillo’s introduced the new sandwich this week. “The Leo” is Italian beef on a roll dipped in gravy and topped with sweet or hot peppers.

Bruce Lemasurier, a manager at Portillo’s, says the new menu item is designed to pay homage to the Chicago-area native. “I think like the rest of Chicago, we were just thrilled and proud that someone from our great city was elevated to this wonderful position and we just wanted to pay homage to that and celebrate with the rest of Chicago. It’s our beef sandwich, again the beef roasted four hours, we use this wonderful spice gravy taht we have so its double dipped so we’re kind of baptizing it twice in there so that’s kind of where we went with the Leo in that again in homage to the Pope. Again, it’s in his honor, we’re just being Chicagoans just thrilled to have this and what a thrill that our city can be involved in this, so again just something that we can celebrate with the rest of the world, our little homage from Portillo’s and Chicago.”

If you want to try The Leo, you need to hurry. It’s only on Portillo’s menu through the month of May.
