HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC () – A favorite character on the ice made an appearance at a “HOT” camp on Hilton Head Island.

Davy, the Savannah Ghost Pirates mascot, showed off his firefighting skills for the Hilton Head Island Fire-Rescue girls’ camp.

The “H.O.T. Girls” camp isn’t about flames or the hot weather, it actually stands for “hands on training” which all the young ladies got from their counselors.

The hope is some of these campers could turn into future firefighters someday.

“They’re learning all these hands-on skills, but we’re also teaching them,” Kenzie Hrobar, Communications Specialist for HHI Fire/Rescue explained. “Building confidence, fostering leadership, strengthening mental resilience and physical fitness and how important those things can take them into any career, whether that’s in the fire service or anything that they choose to do.”

Girls will learn many skills during the weeklong camp. Everything from operating fire hydrants to climbing ladders and rescuing victims.

Fire officials said it’s a great opportunity to get a taste of what the job is really like.
