(NEXSTAR) — It’s been nearly 10 years since Netflix viewers were introduced to the world of “Stranger Things” and, in just a few months, the final episodes of the hit show will be released. In honor of it all, Chips Ahoy! is doing something it has never done before.

The cookie brand and Netflix’s hit series are coming together to release a limited-edition offering, well ahead of the next — and final — episodes being dropped in November.

The Chips Ahoy! x Stranger Things Limited-Edition Cookie, hitting the shelves starting on August 11, is inspired by the Upside Down. Fans of “Stranger Things” are well-versed in the show’s alternate dimension, frequently presented in red hues, especially in the beloved guitar scene featuring Eddie Munson, played by Joseph Quinn.

The cookie packaging leans into that, with “Stranger Things” designs replacing the traditional Chips Ahoy! artwork with a darker color and red lettering.

Consumers will likely be more interested in the cookies inside, however.

As Chips Ahoy! describes them, the cookies are made of a chocolate base, fudge chips, and a red strawberry-flavored filling. This is the first time a fruit flavor has been combined with a Chips Ahoy! cookie, a representative for the brand confirmed.

The filling is meant to “represent the Rifts that are the entrance to the Upside Down.”

Chips Ahoy! provided a package of the new cookies for us to try. While none of us are professional bakers, we’ve had enough cookies (including the Chips Ahoy! Original cookies made with a new recipe) and baked goods to feel confident in our taste-testing abilities.

Upon opening the package, you quickly note the sweet, chocolatey smell you’d expect from a chocolate-and-fudge-based cookie. The cookies themselves were falling apart a bit in our package, which gave a quick glimpse at the red “Rifts” within.

These are chewy Chips Ahoy! cookies, making them soft with a tendency to stick together. But once apart, you can clearly see the fudge chips.

The first bite is where you’ll notice a difference from the traditional chewy Chips Ahoy! offering. While you’re greeted by a soft, chocolatey bite initially, it may otherwise be interrupted by the strawberry-flavored filling, which feels slightly hard. You may feel like you’re nearly crunching on the filling — the opposite of what you might experience with a fruit-filled Fig Newton, for example.

It also doesn’t taste exactly like a strawberry filling — it feels more artificial, one of our guest testers described. Another said the flavoring was akin to a strawberry Pop Tart.

There was one more thing we noticed with the strawberry filling: It wasn’t evenly dispersed throughout the cookie like the packaging shows, and didn’t break through the top as prominently as suggested. Instead, it was uneven or, at times, not even present in a bite of the cookie.

Nonetheless, it melds well with the chocolate fudge cookie surrounding it and provides a tasty alternate reality of the Upside Down, if one exists. A slightly stronger strawberry taste may only have enhanced that feeling.

If you’re ready to try your own “Stranger Things” Chips Ahoy! crossover cookies, they’ll be available in stores nationwide starting on August 11. Chips Ahoy! is also offering a pre-sale option, another first for the brand.

Should you purchase a package, you’ll find a QR code on the front. Scanning it will take you to chipsahoyscan.com, where you can search for Chips Ahoy! cookies hidden within different levels of an augmented-reality game that takes place within the Upside Down.

In-game performance, according to the company, will give you the chance to win limited-edition “Stranger Things” merchandise and a Munson-inspired guitar.

Original Chips Ahoy! packages will also receive a retro-inspired redesign in honor of “Stranger Things,” which will make them “look and feel” like packs from the 1980s, the time period in which the show takes place.

If you’re hoping to enjoy some Chips Ahoy! cookies — limited edition or otherwise — while watching the newest episodes of “Stranger Things,” you’ll want to tuck them away for a few months. The first four episodes of the final season will be released on November 26, followed by three episodes on Christmas Day and the final episode on New Year’s Eve. All episodes are released at 5 p.m. PT.
