(KTLA) — National theater chain Cinemark is offering a one-day deal that will almost certainly lead to hijinks from moviegoers later this month. Cinemark’s first-ever “Bring Your Own Bucket” promotion, part of National Popcorn Day, will be held on Jan. 19.

Here’s how it works.

On Jan. 19, customers can bring in a clean container of their choice and fill it with fresh popcorn for $5 — no movie ticket necessary.

While popcorn lovers can load up on the buttery treat for the one-day event, container sizes are limited to 400 ounces — about 3 gallons or 50 cups.

Cinemark will also be offering $5 XL popcorn buckets at all theater locations throughout the day. Movie-themed buckets are also available for purchase on the Cinemark website.

“National Popcorn Day is one of the best days of the year at Cinemark, and for popcorn lovers everywhere,” said David Haywood, Cinemark’s senior vice president of food and beverage.

There will also be an additional limited-time sweepstakes on the Cinemark Instagram account, allowing moviegoers the chance to earn free popcorn by tagging their friends in the comments. All online gift card purchases will also include a 10% discount during the event.

National Popcorn Day will fall on a Sunday, the weekend after the release of the much-anticipated Julia Garner-led “Wolf Man” remake of the horror classic, as well as the buddy comedy “One of them Days,” starring Keke Palmer and Grammy-winning singer-songwriter SZA, in her acting debut.
