CLAIBORNE COUNTY, Tenn. (WATE) — An air of mourning envelops East Tennessee as friends, business leaders, and officials grieve the sudden passing of Claiborne County Mayor Joe Brooks, who tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident on Friday night.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol has reported that the 56-year-old Brooks was driving a 2014 Harley-Davidson north on State Route 33 in Union County at approximately 11:05 p.m. on Friday. Authorities indicate that he was unable to navigate a curve near the Claiborne County border, causing him to veer off, strike a guardrail, and return to the roadway before finally stopping uncontrollably. Despite wearing a helmet, Brooks succumbed to his injuries. The crash is currently under investigation.
By Saturday, a wave of heartfelt tributes from the community began to pour in, as residents reminisced about Brooks’ extensive public service and the significant mark he left on their lives.
Tributes from neighboring county leaders, law enforcement, emergency management, healthcare organizations, and local community groups praised Brooks as a devoted public servant, respected leader, and loyal friend. His deep commitment to Claiborne County and its residents was fondly remembered.
At Rustic River Restaurant and Kayaking, owners Marci Clawson and Joe Heinz said Brooks was much more than a frequent customer.
“He supported our company like no other,” they said. “He would be here for all our events.”
The couple said Brooks regularly attended community gatherings, encouraged local businesses and was always willing to lend a helping hand whenever someone needed it.
“If I needed anything — a tractor or a truck or whatever — I could call him,” Joe Heinz said. “He’d say, ‘Hey, what do you need?’ That’s awesome as our mayor around here.”
The owners said Brooks’ presence was something customers and employees alike came to expect, remembering his welcoming personality and constant smile.
“He always had a smile, and he gave me a hug every time I saw him,” Clawson said.
“His energy was great,” Heinz added.
As Claiborne County begins to grieve the unexpected loss of its mayor, those who knew Brooks best say they’ll remember him not only for his leadership, but for the kindness, encouragement and genuine care he showed to the people around him.
