MARSHALL, Ill. (WCIA) — Law enforcement has identified the former Clark County resident accused of planning to deploy destructive devices at her old school.
The Evansville Police Department in Indiana said 19-year-old Ahnna Tipton was brought to St. Vincent for an evaluation on May 29. While there, an officer found a “suspicious item” inside Tipton’s backpack.
“The object appeared to be a pill bottle wrapped in duct tape, with a matchstick protruding from the lid and a piece of cloth attached,” the Evansville Police Department said.
An aluminum pipe that was sealed at both ends with what appeared to be “incendiary materials inside the pipe” was found inside the backpack as well.
The police department’s bomb technicians responded to the scene, looked over the materials and talked with Tipton.
Sergeant Anthony Aussieker, Public Information Officer for the Evansville Police Department, said the Hazardous Devices Unit has tools that examine devices that present a risk, and can “render the devices safe,” if necessary.
Tipton admitted to constructing the devices to police, and the Bomb Technicians confirmed that they were “improvised incendiary devices.” She also told police that she had two more devices at her home in Warrick County. After searching, the Hazardous Devices Unit found two more incendiary devices hidden in modified Monster Energy drink bottles.
Tipton was detained, Aussieker said, and officials began to investigate.
During an interview with Tipton, she also revealed that she planned to use the devices at her former high school, in the Marshall Community School District. Aussieker said once the Evansville Police Department learned that Tipton planned to use the devices at her former school in Clark County, they reached out to the Marshall Police Departement. Then, the Marshall Police Department investigated the threat locally, to determine if there was any further risk to the community.
The Evansville Police Department said Tipton was arrested and is facing charges of possession of a destructive device.
According to online records, Tipton had an initial hearing in court on Wednesday, and the court set her bond to $50,000. A pretrial hearing is set for Aug. 13, 2025.
