Clay County’s new $7.2 million sports complex should be ready for use early next year. Officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking March 28.

It’s just north of the intersection of state roads 16 and 21. It will have eight multi-purpose fields and parking for at least 300 vehicles. Restrooms and a short, multi-use trail are also part of the project.

Justin Pierce is director of Clay County Parks and Recreation. He says they hope it will be a regional draw for tournaments.

The property is 250 acres, but Pierce says plans are to develop 46 acres. He says they could build baseball and softball diamonds in the future.

The county received a $3 million matching grant from the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity for the project.
