WAYNESBORO, Ga. () – The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is removing vegetation near the intersection of US Route 25 and Coleman-Young Road, according to the department on Monday.

Georgia DOT said the vegetation is being cut down in an effort to maximize sight distance.

After a fatal crash at the intersection in August 2025, officials with the Burke County Sheriff’s Office and Burke County government asked Georgia DOT to study the area. The department then decided to remove a section of woods, with permission of property owners, near US 25, pushing the tree line up to 15 feet away from its current location.

Georgia DOT said that in addition to what has been studied in regards to vegetation, driver behavior contributes to crashes at the intersection.

“Additionally, our review of the intersection suggests driver behavior may contribute to crashes at this location. Drivers are advised to remember the posted speed limit on US 25 is 65 mph. Because some drivers disobey the speed limit and travel faster than 65 mph, traffic on Coleman-Young Rd. is advised to use caution and allow extra time to safely navigate the intersection,” Georgia DOT said in a statement on Sept. 15. “Drivers are encouraged to obey posted speed limits and proceed with caution while travelling US 25, as there are several intersections and driveways along the route.”

Motorists can expect to see crews working at US 25 and Coleman-Young Rd. for at least one week, according to Georgia DOT. People are asked to slow down and use caution when navigating the work zone.
