In Clearwater, Florida, efforts to enhance safety have been ramped up following an incident where a 17-year-old was injured during a “teen takeover” at Clearwater Beach. A week after the event, local law enforcement has intensified their presence to prevent future disturbances.
Deputy Chief Michael Walek of the Clearwater Police Department announced that an additional 50 officers have been deployed to monitor the beach and its surrounding areas from Friday to Sunday. This increase in patrol is part of a strategic effort to ensure the safety of both residents and visitors.
“The beach is a hub of activity with people engaging in sports, families enjoying time together, and others relaxing under tents,” Walek noted. “This scene is exactly what we strive for—peaceful and enjoyable for everyone.”
During an exclusive interview with 8 On Your Side, Walek discussed the current measures while accompanying reporters on a patrol around Clearwater Beach. Officers were clearly visible, maintaining a presence on the sand, walkways, and roads.
“Everyone is out here doing exactly what they should be,” he remarked, highlighting the positive atmosphere restored by the increased police presence.
The increased presence comes after officers, along with neighboring law enforcement agencies, responded to a teen takeover on the beach on May 31. During that incident, a 17-year-old was shot and taken to a hospital.
“There was a shooter was taken into custody, and there was an additional charge that later that same evening in reference to someone being in possession of a firearm,” Walek said.
According to Walek, the takeover was organized through social media. He said investigators have since identified and stopped two additional takeover attempts before participants could reach Clearwater Beach.
“We meet face-to-face, and we’ll talk to the parents and talk to the person that posted it,” Walek said. “We take it very seriously, and we’ll follow up with a letter.”
Walek said parents play a key role in preventing future incidents.
“I think one of the most important parts of this thing, it starts at home,” he said. “The parents, be a parent, be involved, know what your kids do, and know where your kid’s going. Be involved.”
He also had a message for anyone considering organizing similar gatherings in the future.
“I’m telling you, this type of behavior cannot be tolerated,” Walek said.
Walek said the additional patrol presence will remain in place until the department determines it is no longer necessary.
Meanwhile, investigators continue reviewing video evidence and following up on leads. Walek said the department is working with the State Attorney’s Office as the investigation continues.
