In Clearwater, Florida, Thanksgiving morning kicks off with a tradition that divides families: you’re either a turkey trot enthusiast or you’re not. At the annual Achieve Turkey Trot, participants not only embrace the spirit of the run but also revel in contributing to a good cause.

Amidst the throng of runners this Thursday, a common mantra echoed: run now, feast later.

Among these dedicated participants is 96-year-old Ethel Lehmann, who has been a fixture at the event since its inception.

“I’ve been part of this turkey trot from the start,” Lehmann shared. “I attribute it all to exercise. Yes, exercise. It’s what I believe keeps me feeling youthful,” she added.

This year’s event saw nearly 10,000 runners hit the pavement, with three race options catering to every level of runner.

But for 5K winner Lance Mueller, crossing that finish line quickly meant getting to Thanksgiving dinner faster!

“Eat a lot of pasta the night before and then a lot of pie after the race,” said Mueller.

Lehmann, a winner in our book and ever the athlete, continues to strive for greatness.

“I feel good but I’m a little disappointed in my time,” said Lehmann.

Even though the morning was full of fast feet and belly laughs, there’s a gathering for good behind this tradition.

“A portion of the proceeds from this go back to the community,” said Theresa Hibbard with Achieva. “So we’re giving away $300,000 over the next several weeks to organizations that are education-related, financial literacy, health and human services, including mental health and veterans.”
