CHARLESTON, Ill. (WCIA) — After enduring a tumultuous period marked by nature’s wrath, the Coles County Dragway is set to throw open its gates in just two weeks. The racing strip is poised to bounce back from the significant setback of a tornado that tore through the area on June 17th.
The violent storm left its mark on the dragway, with three buildings reduced to rubble and several light poles toppled. Owner Mike Erwin remarked that remnants of the tornado’s fury still scar the landscape, as debris remains piled on the once bustling property.
Shutting operations for a stretch of six weeks has undeniably wounded the financial health of the dragway. However, Erwin expressed heartfelt gratitude for the community’s unwavering support, which has been instrumental in reviving operations. Among those stepping up, the National Hot Rod Association stands out, having generously donated a new tower for the starting line.
“We were overwhelmed with people stepping up to offer their assistance,” Erwin shared. “Folks I had never met came forward asking, ‘How can we help?’ Absolutely, we welcomed every hand we could get. It was an immense blessing and truly humbling,” he added, reflecting on the community’s generous spirit.
The grand re-opening of the dragway is July 31.
