HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — The recent installation of a new surveillance camera on a beach in Hilton Head Island has sparked discussions about its implications for safety and privacy.
The portable camera was set up by the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) just near the Coligny Beach access point.
According to representatives from BCSO, the camera is intended as a tool to help prevent crime in the area.
Local businesses have voiced concerns to the sheriff’s office about large gatherings causing disturbances, prompting this measure.
The department emphasizes that the camera serves as a “visual deterrent” to discourage potential disruptions.
This camera system is not permanent according to the Sheriff’s Office.
The town of Hilton Head Island is upgrading its own set of cameras for the Coligny parking lot, Coligny Beach park and some parts of the beach.
The town says access to any video footage from those cameras will be restricted and used “solely for legitimate public safety, law enforcement and emergency response purposes.”
That installation will start next month and be finished in 90 days.
