Community Unites at Urbana Memorial for Hit-and-Run Victim

URBANA, Ill. (WCIA) — In a touching tribute, family and friends came together to honor the memory of a young woman tragically killed in a recent accident in Urbana. The incident occurred over the weekend when she was struck by a vehicle while walking along the sidewalk.

The Champaign County Coroner confirmed that 22-year-old Perry Lee lost her life after a car collided with a police cruiser on the University of Illinois campus early on Saturday morning. The impact caused the vehicle to veer onto the sidewalk, tragically hitting Lee.

Standing at the corner of Mathews Avenue and Green Street on Tuesday night, Lee’s best friend, Aria Pleasure, shared heartfelt memories of their friendship. “I know how much I loved her,” Pleasure expressed. “And I think she knows how much I loved her as well. She’s one of the best relationships I’ve ever had in my entire life.”

With heavy hearts, people who knew and loved Lee, who went by the name ‘Ororo,’ came out to remember the person who was hit by a car on Saturday, later dying at Carle Hospital. Lee’s father, whose name is also Perry Lee, said the person driving the red Buick that hit Ororo is still on the run.

“[Police] told us that they have a suspect in mind,” he said. “They know what they want, [it’s] just a matter of locating him at this point. So that’s a sign of relief from there.”

Friends and family said a prayer, lit candles and released balloons in tribute to a person they said changed others’ lives for the better while she was here.

“She’d give a stranger the shirt off her back in the middle of the winter,” Lee’s father said. “That’s just how lovely she was. [She will] always be missed, can’t ever be replaced.”

Pleasure said while Lee was finding her own way in life, she was also lifting others up.

“For my birthday, I didn’t have a place to celebrate,” she said. “And she opened up her house with her family.”

Lee’s family said arrangements are being made for her visitation and funeral, for a person Pleasure said will be missed by so many.

“She’s such a bright light,” she said. “And everybody’s like, it doesn’t matter if you’re a stranger or if you’ve known her for 20 years.”
