In Swainsboro, Georgia, tensions are rising as a protest is scheduled for Monday morning in response to the conviction of Me’elle Merrion. The case, which has captured local attention, involves a 2023 shooting incident with a local law enforcement investigator.

Last week, an Emanuel County jury found Merrion guilty, leading to a sentence of 25 years, with 12 years to be spent in prison and the remainder on probation. The decision has sparked a wave of public outcry, culminating in the planned demonstration.

The incident dates back to September 2023, when officers from the Swainsboro Police Department and the Emanuel County Sheriff’s Office executed a drug search warrant on Colegrove Drive. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation reports that during this operation, Merrion discharged a firearm from within his residence.

Investigator Dakota Lamb was hit in the shoulder during the exchange but has since made a full recovery. Merrion was subsequently arrested, facing charges of aggravated assault. On Friday, the jury delivered a guilty verdict on charges of aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

District Attorney Tripp Fitzner confirmed the conviction, underscoring the gravity of the charges. However, Merrion’s family and supporters maintain that he acted out of fear, arguing that the sentence is disproportionately severe.

has learned the protest is scheduled for 10 a.m. this morning outside the Emanuel County Courthouse in Swainsboro, following the verdict on February 13th.

Supporters say they plan to rally peacefully this morning outside the courthouse. will be there and will bring you updates later today on-air and online.
