String of gun violence on New Years Eve allegedly related to celebratory shots

SAVANNAH, Ga. () – Three magazines worth of gunfire shot into the air early in the morning on New Years Day in Savannah according to one neighbor who caught it all on his doorbell camera.

Mike Arcangelo, a Savannah resident, said he believed it to be celebratory gunfire, but that didn’t make it any less dangerous.

“All of a sudden we heard a dozen rounds at least right at midnight…About a minute pause, same thing again, minute pause, same thing again. I mean, just get down was what was on our mind,” he said.

In Arcangelo’s case, the title of the police report was listed as weapon firing. However, the Savannah Police Department said that if someone discharges a weapon and a person happens to be hit, that constitutes aggravated assault.

That same night, there was another close call.

“Right when the clock hit twelve, the window just like exploded. I opened up the door to my room, I looked down, and there’s just glass shards all over the floor. I look around, and then I see on the banister next to the staircase, there’s a small indentation. Immediately, I picked up that it was a bullet,” Zachary Osterman, said.
Jacquelin Osterman, Zachary’s mother said, “It was terrifying, when my son came downstairs shortly after the bullet had entered our home, I just thought – if you may have come down a minute earlier, you may have been hit.”

The police report that was filed for the Osterman’s incident said it was, “Believed to be from random New Year’s Eve gunfire, which plagues Savannah.”

A friend of Arcangelo, Patrick Wilver, who also lives downtown said the issues in that area even tend to go on beyond holidays.

“New Year’s, Fourth of July, I don’t even go outside anymore because of all the gunfire that you hear,” he said. “It seems to be once a week where I hear somebody dump a magazine whether they’re shooting into the air, shooting at somebody.”
