Costco has issued a recall for its mini beignets after discovering a labeling error that could pose a serious risk to those with allergies. The company revealed that certain packages of mini beignets labeled as containing caramel filling might actually include a chocolate hazelnut filling. This discrepancy means tree nuts, which are allergens, are not listed on the product’s packaging.
The recall notice warns that individuals with an allergy or severe sensitivity to hazelnuts or filberts could face severe, potentially life-threatening reactions if they consume these mislabeled products. It’s a critical reminder for consumers to double-check their purchases if they have nut allergies.
Tree nut allergies are prevalent among both children and adults, according to Food Allergy Research and Education. The organization notes that most tree nut allergies involve nuts like walnuts, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, cashews, and pistachios. Given the potential severity of these allergies, accurate labeling is essential for consumer safety.
