CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — Illinois has lost its first home game of the season against the top-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes.
Turnovers plagued the Illini, as they surrendered the ball three times, leading to 21 points for Ohio State. The Buckeyes secured a 34-16 victory over Illinois.
Illinois struggled to find momentum until the second half, finally reaching the end zone five minutes into the third quarter. Aidan Laughery’s short rush helped narrow Ohio State’s lead.
In the final moments of the fourth quarter, Illinois scored again with a four-yard touchdown reception by Collin Dixon. However, their attempt at a two-point conversion fell short, cementing the score at 34-16 in favor of Ohio State.
Early on, Illinois quarterback Luke Altmyer experienced a setback when he threw his first interception of the season, breaking a streak of over 150 consecutive attempts without one.
Illinois’ 16 points are the most Ohio State has allowed all season, the Buckeyes now 6-0. The Illini move to 5-2 following the loss.
The Illini are off in Week 8 but head west to face the Washington Huskies on Saturday, October 25, with a time and broadcast assignment still to be announced.
