KINGSPORT, Tenn. (WJHL) — FunFest and We Run Events hosted the 35th annual Niswonger Children’s Network Crazy 8s 8K on Saturday.
Runners aged ten to 70 and older completed the figure-8 course to the finish line in J. Fred Johnson Stadium. The finish line also featured runners competing in the Almost Crazy 3K Run/Walk and the Little 8s/Special 8s races.
Hank Brown, director of the Crazy 8’s Race, said that some runners have a long history of competing for the top spot on the podium.
“A lot of people, you don’t see but once a year,” he said. “And I love seeing families come in with their kids, and their kids are going to do Little 8’s.”
“What I really like is when we have heard kids get started running Little 8’s and now they are running the 8K as an adult, maybe 30, 40 years old,” Brown said.
The top runners received cash prizes and vintage-style medals. In the overall competition, the first-place medals for both the men’s and women’s elite divisions were awarded to the same household, as husband and wife Andrew and Tristin Colley claimed victory.
Andrew finished with a blazing time of 22:36, while Tristin crossed the finish line exactly four minutes later at 26:36.
The Colleys said they traveled from North Carolina to compete in the race.
“It’s so fun to share in each other’s joy.” Tristin Colley said. “We are both out here, chasing our dreams, so it is awesome to have the same goals together.”
