NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WJHL) — The Senate Education Committee recently approved the Charlie Kirk American Heritage Act, a bill championed by state Senators Rusty Crowe from Johnson City and Paul Rose from Covington.

This legislation aims to grant local education agencies, public charter schools, and teachers—as well as faculty at public higher education institutions—the authority to teach about the positive influence of religion on American history. This is according to an official release.

The amended bill highlights 19 specific topics for instruction.

“It’s crucial for educators to be able to discuss how religion has positively impacted American history,” Crowe stated in a release. “Charlie Kirk emphasized the importance of freedom of speech and believes that fostering open discussion and debate, particularly among young students, can help diminish politically motivated hate and violence in our society.”

The bill’s counterpart in the House is slated for review by the Education Committee this coming Tuesday.
