TAMPA, Fla. (WFLA) — Cruise ships scheduled to visit Bermuda this week had to be rerouted due to Hurricane Erin.

NBC affiliate WESH reported that Royal Caribbean’s Vision of the Seas pulled into Port Canaveral on Sunday morning.

The ship departed from Maryland and was originally scheduled to visit Bermuda. However, Royal Caribbean changed the ship’s course due to the hurricane churning in the Atlantic.

“We’d rather be safe. It is disappointing because we wanted to be in Bermuda. But I see the hurricane is heading right there,” passenger Sherry Teycer told WESH.

WAVY, WFLA’s sister station in Norfolk, reported that Carnival Cruise Line also had to adjust the itinerary for the Carnival Sunshine to avoid the storm.

The ship was scheduled to depart from Norfolk on Sunday to embark on a six-day cruise with a two-day stop in Bermuda. It will now visit Carnival’s new private island, Celebration Key, and Nassau in the Bahamas.

According to WAVY, Carnival sent the following email to guests:

“We know you were looking forward to visiting Bermuda and share your disappointment for this weather-related change of plans, but trust you will agree that your safety takes priority.”

Vacationer Tavis Graves told the news station that he is disappointed to be missing Bermuda, but said he and his family will make the most of what they’ve been dealt.

“You have no choice but to be positive,” said Graves, “the money is spent. There’s plenty of things to do on the ship, so we’ll be alright.”
