Danville Unites: Candlelight Vigil and Memorial Tree Ceremony Illuminate Community Spirit

DANVILLE, Ill. — Curtis Beasley and Jamie Nightlinger recently joined WCIA 3’s Mitchell Rife to discuss an upcoming candlelight vigil and the installation of a memorial tree in Danville, aimed at honoring victims of gun violence.

Throughout the summer, a dedicated youth council, comprised of local high school and college students, has been actively meeting to explore strategies for curbing gun violence in the area. By the end of July, this group organized a youth panel at the Danville Town Hall, providing a platform for young voices to share their insights and suggestions with the community.

Aniyah Davis, an 18-year-old who tragically fell victim to gun violence in a Danville park this past June, is at the heart of the council’s efforts. Her parents have been actively collaborating with the youth council to tackle the pervasive issue of gun violence.

In a poignant tribute, a Memorial Tree will be adorned at 5:30 p.m. on Monday at the Douglas Discovery Garden. The event will feature a ceremony to remember those lost to gun violence. In addition, Project Success of Vermilion County, Inc. has been working diligently to create safe spaces for youth, aiming to foster a sense of community and reduce violence.
