DANVILLE, Ill. (WCIA) — WCIA has an update for you on the UPS Customer Center in Vermilion County.
Last week, WCIA reported that the location could be closing it’s doors for good soon. Now, an Economic Development Agency in Danville is attempting to save the business.
Vermilion Advantage is hoping they can get UPS to reconsider closing it’s door in Danville, right on the border of Tilton. CEO of Vermilion Advantage Mike Marron said he reached out to the corporate office last week.
If the shipping center closes he said about fifty people will be losing their job’s. Marron, along with Tilton’s mayor, both said this can’t keep happening to businesses in the area.
After losing quaker oats last year, this means another prominent company could soon be leaving Danville.
“It’s another blow. And it’s certainly hard on the community. It’s hard on Vermilion Advantage, it’s hard on the Village of Tilton, it’s hard on all of us. It just means that we’ve got a lot more work to do and we’re going to have to keep redoubling our efforts and we’ve got to stop this trend somehow. We’ve got to stem the flow of businesses closing and we’ve got to reverse the trend and get some businesses located here,” Marron said.
He said right now they’re looking to hire a consultant to help them create a plan to revitalize the county. They’ll be looking at different companies that could be interested in coming to Danville and other towns in the county. Marron said he knowns it’ll be a long process but he’s hoping this will help the community expand within the next couple of years.
