Daycare Worker Warns of Safety Risks After Orange County Crash

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. – A Pine Hills daycare remains shut down after an SUV crashed through the building Thursday, injuring three children and two adults. The incident is also prompting renewed scrutiny of safety conditions along one of the neighborhood’s busiest thoroughfares.

The collision occurred at a child care center in Pine Hills. Video recorded shortly afterward showed the vehicle inside the structure and significant damage to the daycare.

Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children said Monday that one of the injured children was still hospitalized but listed in good condition.

Family friends were at the site Monday, helping remove belongings from the damaged center and place them in storage. They said off camera that a GoFundMe campaign is being organized to help the daycare secure a new facility and reopen outside Pine Hills. You can check it out HERE.

Orange County officials said the building cannot reopen until inspectors assess the damage, required permits are secured and repairs receive approval. News 6 has asked the county how long that process may take.

The crash has also focused attention on the concentration of child care facilities along Pine Hills Road. News 6 identified 16 daycare centers located along the road.

Pamela Green, an employee at Stars on the Rise, expressed sympathy for those affected and concern about the roadway’s conditions.

“Our condolences definitely go out to all the teachers, the director, and the owner of the building,” Green said. “This is a very busy street. It’s one of the main roads through Pine Hills, and they do have construction going on right now.”

County records indicate the property has operated as a daycare since 2009, seven years before Orange County adopted its vehicle barrier ordinance. The rule requires newly established daycare centers to install protective barriers in front of their buildings.

Orange County officials said the need for a barrier at the Pine Hills facility will be determined based on the scope of the repairs proposed for the building.
