ORLANDO, Fla. – Trooper Steve, News 6’s traffic safety expert, dedicates his time to answering viewers’ questions and offering valuable insights about road regulations, aiming to enhance the driving skills of Central Florida’s residents through education.

This Thursday, Trooper Steve turned his focus to the legal obligations faced by those relocating to Florida.

Relocating to Florida is undoubtedly thrilling, with its promise of sunshine, beautiful beaches, and new beginnings. However, newcomers must also adapt to the state’s specific driving norms and regulations.

A frequently asked question from individuals settling in Florida is, “What is the timeframe for updating my driver’s license and vehicle registration after making the move here?”

Florida law gives you 30 days from the time you establish residency to get your Florida driver’s license.

Once you start a job, enroll your kids in school, register to vote or even just decide that Florida is officially home, the clock starts ticking.

The same 30-day rule applies to your vehicle registration.

Before you can register your vehicle, you’ll need to get Florida auto insurance, and it must come from a licensed Florida insurance provider.

Once that’s in place, you can head to your local tax collector’s office to complete the process.

It’s a quick timeline, but it’s designed to keep our roads safe and ensure every driver is properly licensed and insured under Florida law.

If you’re new here, welcome and take care of these steps early so you can enjoy everything the Sunshine State has to offer.

The last thing you want is a non-moving traffic violation.
