Police pursuit turns deadly in Columbia County

COLUMBIA COUNTY, Ga. () – The Columbia County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed one person has died after a police pursuit that took place Monday afternoon.

According to police, 41-year-old Shawn E. Threatt of Milledgeville was operating a Chevrolet Malibu in a chase that began shortly after 4 p.m. on Feb. 17. It started at Appling Harlem Road and West Forrest Street before going through North Fairview Drive and south on Sawdust Road. Threatt allegedly had “several active felony warrants through Columbia County, Grovetown, Waynesboro, and the Georgia Department of Parole. “

CCSO Deputy O. Gutierrez was reportedly approaching the pursuit from the direction in which it was heading, and was struck by the fleeing vehicle. He received minor injuries from the accident and was taken to the hospital by CCSO personnel to be evaluated.

Threatt was transported to Doctor’s Hospital by Gold Cross and was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
