DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — A heating lamp in a chicken coop caused a garage fire at a residence in Decatur early Thursday morning.

On May 15 at approximately 4:03 a.m., the Decatur Fire Department responded to the report of a house fire on S 36th Street in Decatur. On scene, crews found a working fire located in the garage at the residence.

Firefighters quickly began an attack to put out the fire and worked to ventilate smoke from the inside of the house. The two occupants of the house, who were able to escape unharmed, said that their smoke alarms activated and allowed them to exit safely.

After the fire was extinguished, investigators determined that the cause of the fire was a heating lamp being used in a chicken coop inside the garage. Due to the damage sustained, the occupants will be displaced for an indefinite period of time.

The Decatur Fire Department was assisted by Ameren, Abbott Ambulance and the Long Creek Fire Department on the scene.
