DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — The public transit system is releasing new buses in Decatur on Friday, and they may look a little different.

The five buses are hybrid. They run on both diesel and electricity — and will flip between the two automatically when the transport moves into a certain part of the City. Satellites will track it and let the bus know when to change fuel options.

Officials said they also run on B20 diesel which burns cleaner.

“With running B20 in our buses, the American Lung Association did let us know that in the first six months we were running B-20 in our diesel buses, we saved 163 metric tons of carbon from the environment, which is equivalent to planning 2,200 trees,” Decatur Transportation Services Director Lacie Elzy said.

Only two of buses will begin running on Friday. They’ll follow the MLK and Water Street routes.
