DECATUR, Ill. (WCIA) — With Super Bowl weekend quickly approaching, the Decatur Police Department is reminding fans and watchers about the dangers of impaired driving.

According to the Decatur Police, having a designated driver is the best defense against the
dangers of impaired driving.” And, they suggest that if your Super Bowl celebration involves alcohol or cannabis, you should plan on finding a ride home with a sober driver.

“Everyone wants to have a good time on Super Bowl night, so we want our community residents and guests to plan for safe rides home,” Decatur Sgt. Steve Hagemeyer said. “Even one drink can impair judgement. You should never put yourself, or others, at risk because you made the choice to drive impaired.”

Hagemeyer said whether you’re at a party, hosting a gathering, or going out, keep your safety in mind. When it’s time to leave, make sure your driver is sober. And, it’s important to make sure you’re not only in a car with a sober driver but also wearing a seatbelt at all times.

Hagemeyer also said to remember that walking impaired can be just as dangerous, so make sure a sober friend is walking with you.

So, if you’re planning on heading out for a night of fun on the Super Bowl, make sure to follow these tips from the Decatur Police Department for safe evening:

  • Drunk or high, it doesn’t matter. It is never okay to drive impaired. Designate a
sober driver or plan to use public transportation or a ride service to get home
    safely.
  • If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement.
  • Have a friend who is about to drive impaired? Take the keys away and plan to get
    your friend home safely.
  • Always buckle up!
